Both sedans are reasonably efficient. The 3 Series maxes out at 26/36 mpg city/highway in RWD configuration with its four-cylinder engine, a few ticks above the Audi's top fuel economy rating.
The 320d Touring, as it could be summed up in a catchy slogan, drives like a BMW, the X1 like a well-positioned front-wheel drive SUV. Among other things, this is due to the much finer suspension comfort of the 3 Series, which, especially when equipped with the optional adaptive chassis (1,100 euros), rolls along remarkably smoothly.
